Story Time
As a college student, the semester always come to a point where it is time for you to decide whether you want to proceed forward with a class or if you would like to drop the class and receive a "W" on your transcript. Usually this is not a significant time in the semester for me as I would like to think that I typically do well in my classes, but this semester was a little different. I was faced with a class where I was putting forth all of my effort and receiving little success in return. Ultimately, it came to a point where I had to decide whether I wanted to fight to continue down a downward spiral or if I wanted to drop the class with a sigh of relief. As you can probably tell, I decided to drop the class. I came to the realization that staying in the class was not beneficial for me. What I realized was that there was a disconnect between the teaching style and my method of learning, and there was simply nothing I could do about that. Of course, I was faced with a difficult situation as this was a setback in terms of my classes, my scholarships, and my time. Looking back, I don't regret my decision at all. Through this experience, I learned a lot about myself and how to deal with a setback. Knowing that there are college students from all over that deal with all kinds of setbacks, I've decided to compile a list of tips for dealing with a setback.
Tips for Dealing with a Setback
1. Realize that it is not the end of the world
2. Appreciate the decisions that you have made and trust those decisions
3. Collect your thoughts and prepare for your progression forward from your setback
4. Think about alternatives that are equally as good or even better
5. Use this an opportunity to learn and grow
